The eastern Roman Empire was able to stay strong because Constantinople and other eastern cities were on trade routes. The economic gains from trade of spices and other items from far east guaranteed wealth and stability. The eastern empire was able to stay rich and strong and then it became known as the Byzantine Empire. :)

The Western half of the Roman Empire in the end suffered much from the combination of less-than-capable emperors and the habit that had grown there of military commanders in the provinces to claim the imperial throne when another emperor had bitten the dust (almost none died in their beds). While every few years this unrest started again, several tribes on the move invaded the Roman provinces, profiting from the fact that local commanders were vying for the throne instead of doing their job.

While Western emperors were grappling with these problems, Eastern emperors at the time had a much more regular succession and the East had the good luck of having a number of very capable emperors. Moreover, the Eastern Empire's territories were much less plagued by great movement of peoples and tribes trying to get in.

Although Byzantium would indeed survive the Western Roman Empire for 1,000 years, there was a long period of decline to precede it,partly brought about by the rise of Islam. When Byzantium finally fell in 1453 it was hardly more than a dirt-poor city-state that had for many years been paying tribute to - and as such was reduced to little more than a client State of - the Ottoman sultan.

What was the name of the eastern empire of rome?

You should be more specific as to what you are referring to by eastern empire. I will assume that you mean the eastern part of the Roman Empire. Historians have coined the term Byzantine Empire to refer to the eastern part of the Roman Empire after the fall of the western part of this empire. The western part fell under the strain of the invasions by Germanic peoples. The eastern part was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for nearly 1000 years. The people in question did not know the term Byzantine and called their empire Roman Empire.

How did a sting economy help the Byzantine empire survive?

The less the region was removed from the Earth's north frost pole (located in the northeastern part of Russia near Alaska), the more difficult life became and, consequently, the region has a higher technological ceiling. The western part of the empire of Rome was farther from the pole of frost than the eastern part. So when western Rome reached its technological ceiling, eastern Rome (Byzantium) had a growth reserve of about 500-1000 years.
