Easy answer: the 50 States did not join together to form a union.

Originally, the British colonists who came to the east coast formed 13 colonies. Eventually, they tired of Britain's policies and heavy taxation, so they went to war with Britain. This war is often called the 'Revolutionary War'. When the colonies won this war, they came together for the protection of all 13 colonies, for trade and commerce among each other and other nations, and to form an Army to protect them all. They wrote up rules and laws, and started a new nation that they called, "United States of America". Through the years, more areas were added to make more States.

The 49th State was Alaska, which became a State in January 3, 1959, The 50th State was Hawai'i, which became a State in August 21, 1959. It took 183 years for the United States of America to reach its current count of 50 States.
