There are various attempts at accurate counts, but these are all flawed due to inaccurate counting in many countries. In many third world countries large numbers of people are uncounted, either due to corruption (China - only allowed one child, so pay the census inspector to ignore the others), and inefficiency (India, of course). In many countries people are in hiding (Europe, and much of Africa, and wherever there are refugees and illegal immigrants). And in parts of the developed world there is deliberate avoidance of the census, as a matter of "civil liberty".
