Ephorus lived in the 4th century BCE, specifically from around 400 to 330 BCE. He was a Greek historian from Cyme in Asia Minor and is best known for his work "Universal History," which is considered one of the earliest examples of a comprehensive historical narrative. His writings provided insights into Greek history and the broader Mediterranean world during that period.
Demophilus the historian, edited the first universal history written by his father Ephorus
Yes, according to tradition. This may have secular support from the ancient king-lists of India, Sumeria, and Ashurbanipal, which give very high lifespans for the earliest kings. Similarly, Josephus wrote 2000 years ago: "all those that have written Antiquities, both among the Greeks and barbarians relate that the ancients lived a thousand years: Manetho, who wrote the Egyptian History; and Berosus, who collected the Chaldean inscriptions; and Mochus, and Hestieus; and, besides these, Hieronymus the Egyptian, and those who composed the Phoenician History, agree to what I have said; Hesiod also, and Hecatseus, Hellanicus, and Acusilaus; and besides these, Ephorus and Nicolaus."
Yes. For example, Adam lived 930 years, and Metushelach lived 969 years (Genesis 5). The idea "bothers" us only because it seems impossible today. Seeming impossibility, however, is not disproof. Any disproof would have to come from physical evidence, not conjecture or mathematics. Many ancient nations and historians have records of "unnaturally" long lifespans of the ancients: Manetho, Berosus, Mochus, Hestiaeus, Hieronymus the Egyptian, Hesiod, Hecataeus, Hellanicus, Acusilaus, Ephorus and Nicolaus all state that the ancients lived around a thousand years. Such records are found in the histories of ancient Sumeria, China, Greece, Persia, Vietnam and India. Such widespread agreement can only be because it (like the Creation) is a worldwide tradition based upon more than mere myth.
Ephorus of Cyme (in Asia Minor) in the 4th Century BCE wrote a universal history of Greece from the Dorian conquest to 340 BCE in 29 books. His son Demophilus added a 30th book. Unfortunately most has not survived - we have excerpts and quotations. He is credited with being the first to write a universal history, however this is an exaggeration as he limited it to the Greek world, and universal means more than just the Greek part of history.
