My 91 did the same thing until the odo/ trip odo quit working. Now the speedo doesn't jump much at all. Maybe slipping/sticky odo gear?

If the trouble is the speedometer itself, you can't; but it could be the sending unit and that can be replaced fairly easily. If you remove the right front wheel and move the skirt it can be seen on top of the transaxle extension. If your speedometer AND odometer have ceased to work this is the culprit but if the odometer works accurately but not the speedometer you need another instrument cluster to get a new speedometer.
