The Tea Pot Scandal commonly called The Teapot Dome Scandal
"CREEP" was a derogatory term used to describe "The Committee to Re-Elect the President" which was President Richard Nixon's re-election committee. It was run by Nixon Attorney General John Mitchell and included; G. Gordon Liddy, E. Howard Hunt, Charles "Chuck" Colson, and a political intern named Karl Rove. Five people associated with CREEP broke into Democratic Party Headquarters in the Watergate complex. They forever forged the name Watergate into the scandal world and today we still add "gate" to every political scandal that comes around. They were discovered, arrested and eventually jailed for their crimes. The scandal eventually brought down the re-elected President and Nixon resigned from office in disgrace. The five men were Virgilio González, Bernard Barker, James W. McCord, Jr., Eugenio Martínez, and Frank Sturgis, who were charged with burglary and wiretapping. A grand jury indicted them, as well as Hunt and Liddy, for conspiracy, burglary, and violation of federal wiretapping laws. The five burglars who broke into the office were tried by Judge John Sirica and convicted on January 30, 1973. It was in all the papers and the story of one of those newspapers is told in the book and movie "All the President's Men," by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford play in the movie. You can rent it online and get the whole story.

The big scandal was the one involving Carter's old Georgia buddy, Bert Lance, whom Carter appointed as his Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Lance was forced to resign when improprieties arose from Lance's board chairmanship at Calhoun (GA) bank. Lance was indicted and tried but got off. The failed Iranian rescue attempt was a fiasco and embarrassment, but not really a scandal.
