Try removing the engine mount bolts and any other connections to the engine that would Prevent you from jacking it up 3 - 4 inches, or enough height to clear the crossmember when removing the pan..

Go to autozone.com and enter truck info.,year make, model and engine size,then join to register to where you can use there repair guides.Look up alternator ,then to right of screen, click on repair guide and it will show and tell you how to replace.
You did not specify what engine, however that is a common problem in alot of those cars, you need to remove upper and lower intake manifolds to get to sensor. Refer to repair manual if you do not have auto repair experience (and understand directions), it may be found at library or bought at parts store.
