take the front grill support off if the engine is in the car. then remove the plate covering the cam. then remove the cam?. it is alot easier with the engine on a stand.

How hot did it get before you shut down? Overheating an engine can warp a head and end up with a blown head gasket. Run a compression test to check.
GM vehicles do not have a fuel shut off inertia switch
If memory serves me right you need to remove the pan and remove some parts up front that won't allow the pump to come out until you do.
if it is a gm with the little resistor chip in it you could try to cleand the chip with alcohol to remove oils from skin and such
If all the lifters are out of the way, the cam should slide right out. Worst case scenario would be to remove the rear soft plug and drive the cam forward. This would likely ruin the cam bearings, which can be replaced.
