Camera lens filters? They are known as FL series filters: FL-W, FL-D, FL-B used to correct the greenish color cast of the various types of fluorescent lighting. The problem would be most pronounced in color film, but would have the effect of reducing contrast between the shades of gray represented by certain colors in black & white Photography.
Enlarger filters? They are used to modify the contrast of variable contrast black & white print papers. They are also used in color printing to affect the color cast of the print.
black and white photography
The word for black-and-white photography is "monochromatic" although some is technically not composed of black and white (or halftone dots) but rather shades of gray, known as "grayscale." Black-and-white photography also extended to the use of a single warmer tone called "sepia" (a reddish-brown pigment originally obtained from cuttlefish).
