My1997 ford expedition gear shift went from park and fell all the way to 1 can you tell me how to repair this?

I don't know if an Expedition uses linkage rods or shift cables so I'll answer for both:
BLOCK THE WHEELS AND SET THE PARKING BRAKE SO THAT THE VEHICLE CAN'T ROLL!!!
You may need to jack up the vehicle to get under it. If so, use proper jack stands that are in good condition.
Climb UNDER the vehicle, have someone moving the shifter and watch the side of the transmission.
You SHOULD be able to see the linkage. If a linkage rod is not connected it may be as simple as re-connecting the linkage and replacing the locking pin.
If your vehicle uses shift cables you may need to replace a damaged shift cable. That would be a dealer item, meaning that you will only be able to purchase a shift cable from the dealer. Adjusting the cable may be a bit of a task for someone who hasn't done it before so you might want to take the vehicle to either a transmission specialist or your favorite mechanic.

Had the same problem with my 97 yesterday, I also found a hex bolt on the floorboard. As it turns out there are multiple right angle bolts controlling the shifter movement and one had fallen out. My mechanic charged me $55 to reinstall the bolt and tighten the others. Good Luck! This is how to repair: If you climb under the dash on the drivers side with a flash light, look right above the steering column and you will see a brass colored bracket attached to the shifter. If your bolt fell out you will recognize it. There are two. Replace the one that fell out, and slowly tighten the bolts back into place ensuring the surfaces are flush. I have a picture, wish I could post it. There is no good luck, just do it!
