It's an emissions device that regulates the exhaust gases.
If it doesn't 'cycle' properly, it will eventually cause engine problems.
It's easy to take off & clean. Just look for a You Tube video that shows you how to clean it. If you're not confident, buy a new one. They're reasonably cheap.
