Turkish Empire
Istanbul is a very old city, originally founded as a trading city by the ancient Greeks and called Byzantium. Later, the first Christian emperor of the Roman Empire (Constantine) renamed it after himself (Constantinople) and moved the capital of the Roman Empire there from Rome. Later, after the fall of Rome it became the capital of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire for almost a thousand years until it was captured by the Ottoman Turks, renamed Istanbul, and it was their capital until the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in World War 1. After that Istanbul remained the capital of Turkey, and so it is today. It is a very famous city with a long history.

After the Persians failed to bring peace to the eastern Mediterranean in the Persian Wars, Persia withdrew to leave the Greek cities to get back to their usual fighting between each other. Athens then turned the anti-Persian league it led into an empire of its own, and over-reached itself, bringing on a war with the Peloponnesian League led by Sparta. This 27-year war severely damaged the city-states of Greece. In the process Sparta had to turn to Persia for support, and then defeated Athens, stripping it of its empire. The weakened cities continued fighting amongst each other in varying alliances, and Thebes replaced Sparta as the leading power. All this fighting paved the way for the dominance of Macedonia.

Byzantine Empire is a term which has been coined by historians to indicate the eastern part of the Roman Empire after the fall of the western part. The people in question did not know this term, called their empire Roman Empire and still considered as the Roman Empire. It was in the eastern Mediterranean and it was centred on Greek culture because Constantinople, its capital was in Greece and because this area had been ruled by the Greeks by some 300 years before the Roman takeover. Syriac and Egyptian culture also had an influence.

The art of the eastern and western parts of the Roman Empire were similar because in both parts of this empire it was Greco-Roman art. This is a term which indicates the fact that Roman art became heavily influenced by Greek art. Greek art had already influenced the eastern Mediterranean before it was taken over by the Romans because the Greeks had ruled this area for three hundred years prior to this. The Romans spread Greco-Roman art in the western part of the empire. It has to be noted that, however, many of the local peoples in the empire retained their traditional art.
