Top end maintenance would be maintenance done to the head, or top of the engine. Typically this included grinding the valves, replacing valve seals, milling the head flat, and replacing the gaskets.
On the 2.2 and 2.5 common block the starter is always at the rear of the engine, below the exhaust manfold on the drivers side. It is nestled on the back of the block and goes into the transaxle housing. The bolts are not easy to get to.

Open the hood and look down toward the radiator, it is right in front on top of the radiator. The cord has a round cover on it. Remove the round cover and you will see the 3-prong plug-in.

The Thermostat on the jimmy is located on the engine end of the top radiator hose. Just simply find the hose on the top right hand side of your radiator and follow it to the engine block.
It's imprinted on the engine block near the distributor just below the top of the block.
