before they wear down to Metal to Metal contact...the time period varies depending on how fast you stop, and how loaded the vehicle is... also, Everyone should have a manual, and the library should have a professional shop manual available for copies in the reference section (FOR FREE)...read up and fix 'em like the pro's...! :) Dave
The front brakes on any vehicle do most of the stopping. When you apply the brakes the weight shifts to the front of the vehicle. For this reason the front brakes are needed more than the rear. Try stopping a vehicle with just the hand brake which applies only the rear brakes.
Front brakes or back> front is really simple, when you take the caliper off, the caliper is held on with 2 1/2 bolts... the rotor will come off if your going to replace that to, it will slide off the spindels when the caliper is removed... put the new pads in place and slide the caliper back on and put the 2 bolts back in to hold the caliper in place.
The front and rear brakes are a separate system on most vehicles since aprox 1968. One bowl feeds the front and the other bowl feeds the rear. You have a fluid leak somewhere, have it checked out. The front (usually larger) bowl supplies the front brakes, the rear bowl supplies the rear brakes. Check the front brake system for leaks immediately, these are your primary power for stopping. It should also be noted that front brakes, typically disk brakes, due to wearing over time will cause the fluid level in the front reservoir to drop. This will occur over months or years and is normal and acceptable as long as the level remains above minimum and below maximum. Any time sudden fluid level drops are experienced, a leak is indicated and should be repaired immediately.
No! Something is wrong.
By the hissing noise it sounds like you need a new brake booster
Yes.
Tools needed to replace front brakes 2002 Ford Focus?
Usually the rear pads or brake shoes depending on whether or not the back brakes are disc or drum brakes will last 2 times longer the the front brakes. 75% of your braking is done by the front brakes. For example, if you have 60,000 miles and your front pads need to be replaced the rear ones will only be about 1/2 worn out.
Rear brakes do not have to be replaced too often. It's really hard to tell without looking at it. What you can do is to replace front brakes and test drive it, if you feel that your car brakes works just fine you do not need to replace rear brake shoes.
i did my brakes most of the time it will only need an hour of my time to do both front brakes.....
how do you replace front left turn signal on a 2001, volvo, s80
No. You will only need to replace the brake shoes if they are worn down. Generally the front brakes do 70% of braking leaving the rear with 30%, which will cause the front pads to wear first. What is important however is that you replace either front brakes or rear brakes as a set. i.e. if you're replacing the front brakes do the right and left side.
If the the brakes replace from a dealer for the front brakes including re-surfacing the rotor disc is.......$420.00

Visit the forums at genvibe.com. There is a nice walk through with brakes to service your front brakes.
If your brakes work going backwards better than forwards, you should replace your front brakes. You can get your rotors turned to save time, as well.
