The temp sending unit on the engine could be unplugged or faulty.
normally the gauge should be in the middle.(between hot and cold) that is concider operating temp.
In the engine block of a vehicle, the part which is responsible for sending information to the temperature gauge is called the temperature gauge sending unit.
I would not worry to much about this noise when the motor is cold; engines have clearanaces that come together at operating temperature. If this noise happens when the motor is at operating temperature then you might have a problem.
Make sure it is full of coolant. There probably is a small leak causing the smell. Check it cold as sometimes it leaks cold but not hot.
Hey Ken==Check the coolant in the radiator WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD. Sometimes the coolant recovery bottle wilpopiooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool still have coolant but the rad low. GoodluckJoe
The thermostat is probably stuck open, even when the engine is cold.
Summer 10w30. Winter, cold climate 5w30.
The temp sending unit may be shorted to ground. Unplug the sending unit to see if the gauge drops to cold. If it does, you have a faulty temp sending unit.
Have you checked the thermostat gauge on the dashboard. Is it operating at normal levels or staying on the "c" for cold. Look at how the gauge is registering next time you are out and have driven long enough for the motor to warm up.
Because the Main Gear in the Blend Motor has cracked and is now not turning the heat/cold door to the Cold position. 3 fixes: Buy a new Blend motor, takes about 5mins to replace. Buy a new Blend Motor Gear, will take about 30mins to fix. Repair current gear with Epoxy, takes about 30mins and 12hrs for the glue to set up strong enough to use it.
If you lift the hood, remove the air box (disconnecting the inlet air temp and MAF) and look straight down onto the motor you will see the water temp sensor that is the one that controls the cold engine start. The coolant sensor the controls the gauge is inside and you have to remove the engine cowl
Cold Outside was created in 1997.
Cold climate starters are capable of delivering higher current during cold start. Cold start system is always a combination of the starter motor with a suitable battery.
sounds like there is short in the flux condenser that senses the pressure change in the differing temperatures KansasCity Computers

Low Coolant or faulty gauge
at the beginning it will be cold, but it will warm up as you start driving
