In the USA, the Protege was available as a DX, LX, or ES. The DX and LX have the 1.5L engine, and the ES has the 1.8L. In Canada, there was only the SE and LX. The SE had the DX and LX drivetrain, that is to say the 1.5L engine mated to either an automatic, or 5-speed manual transmission. The was the equivalent of the American ES model. The quickest way to identify a car packing the 1.8L engine, without popping the hood is to take a peek under the rear. The 1.8L models came with a rear sway bar from the factory, and the 1.5Ls did not. 1998 Mazda Protege 1.5L 4-cyl Engine Code Z5D 1998 Mazda PROTEGE 1.8L 4-cyl Engine Code BP DOHC
