Had the same issue w/ a 95 and it turned out to be the switch that activates the light in trunk jammed, i was able to pull the plastic cover that hides the lock off and tapping the switch (it a white piece of plactic near the center /right) but be warned its not a one time thing. get everything out before closing it again. With a metal hanger ..... pull trunk latch ....go through the trunk/armrest opening.... the rest is up to u...... note hanger will mess up weather strip and or paint
you dont its just for show evidently
it should be in the trunk, you will see a hole in the rear trunk panel where the rest button is located.
Most likely it is coming in throgh the trunk seal. On a dry day wash your car and then open the trunk and see if the trunk seal is wet and there is a trail of water entering the trunk
usually in the trunk, some are in the passenger right side kick panel. some galants do not even have one.Ex. 1995 galant s does not have one.
You need to access the trunk lever through the back seat that folds down. Be sure to grab a flashlight and a long tool, such as a flathead screwdriver. This is easiest if you have a thin person that can at least put head and torso into trunk (basically lying down through back seat into the trunk) Next, have someone outside the car, with the trunk key. The person in the trunk need to manuever the flathead screwdriver in the trunk latch as the person outside turns the trunk key. I found out if the trunk is slammed shut or closed with a bit o'force, it jams the latch to open the trunk. So, when closing the trunklid, a little bit of pressure is all that is needed, so to prevent having to climb through the cubby hole in the back seat. Thank Mitsubishi for being savvy for the back seat trunk access ... :)
If the back of the rear seat can be removed, it may be possible to enter the trunk and open it. If not, then the lock will either have to be picked or drilled out.
ks430 trunk latch
Open your trunk and find the wires that go to the bulb over the license plate. Twist the base to remove the light.
my trunk latch won't work what could be wrog
Unplug the wires going to the trunk latch.
To fix a trunk latch that is stuck open, the teeth on the lock may have to be adjusted so the trunk will close. It is also possible that the cable for the trunk latch is broken. To fix the gas cap door latch may require a little bending and adjusting with a pair of pliers.
