From http://www.astro.uu.nl/~strous/AA/en/antwoorden/maan.html#19: The motion of the Moon is much more difficult to calculate than the motion of the Sun. If you want very precise directions, then you're best off using a planetarium program, which can calculate the direction of the Moon for whatever time and location you want, and (usually) can calculate the direction at moonrise and moonset as well. Some examples are Redshift 5 (for Microsoft Windows; http://www.maris.com) and xplns (for Linux; http://www.astroarts.com/products/xplns/), but there are many more. If you don't mind doing some calculations yourself, then you can try the instructions from the "Positions in the Sky"-page. If you just want the general direction, and already know where the Sun rises and sets in each season for the location that you are interested in, then you can figure it out as follows: If the Moon is x days beyond the phase of New Moon, then it rises and sets roughly where the Sun does x times 2/5 months later and x times 4/5 hours earlier, as seen from the same location on Earth. Likewise, if the Moon is x days before New Moon, then it rises and sets roughly where the Sun does x times 2/5 months earlier and x times 4/5 hours later.

Why does the sun set and the moon doesn't?

The moon rises and sets just like the sun, but unlike the sun moonrise and moonset can occur an any time of the day throughout the 29 day lunar month.

Why does the moon come ut at night?

The moon does not come out only at night. It is visible in the sky during during times in its orbit in both daylight and nighttime hours. This may be confirmed by reviewing any table of moonrise and set times as is found in books such as the Old Farmers Almanac.

How long does it take for the moon to cross the sky from moon-rise to moon-set?

About 12 hours but depends how far you are from the equator and the time of the year. At the poles the moon does not set in mid-summer and does not rise at all mid-winter! The duration from moonrise to moonset is cyclic on the lunar cycle, and is surprisingly variable over this short period. For example in March 2010 for Phoenix AZ it varies from a bit more than 9.5 to almost 15.25 hours. This is because the moon's orbit around the earth is at a 5° tilt relative to the earth's orbit around the sun For exact times deduct the moonset time from the moonrise time given at one of these: http://www.almanac.com/rise/index.php http://www.sunrisesunset.com/custom_srss_calendar.asp

In which direction do the stars and planets rise?

The moon rises in the east. The Moon revolves around the Earth and therefore its position as we see it is relative to the Sun and it changes quickly. Within a timespan of 24 hours the Moon's horizontal position changes by approximately 12 degrees in a counter-clockwise direction relative to the Sun. This is the main reason that moonrise and moonset occur later than the day before, and so the Moon does not always rise in the same place in the sky. On some days the Moon does not rise at all so the event will not occur until the day after, this is because the time between moonrises is a bit more than 24 hours. From the South and North Poles of the Earth, they Moon can be seen all around the clock at times.

If you were standing on a beach in California facing the water will you see a moonrise or a moon set over the water?

Sun set and moon set would both be over the water.

What will you see if you were standing on beach a moonrise or moon-set?

If the water is to the east of you and you watch at the right time, you can see the moon (and the sun too) rise out of the water. If the water is to the west of you and you watch at the right time, you can see the moon (and the sun too) set into the water.

When standing on a beach in California facing the water will you see a moonrise or moonset over the water?

Being in the west it would be moon set, in the east facing the Atlantic it would be moon rise.

How will you describe the moon when it is in the general direction of the sun?

The Moon always keeps the same side facing the Earth. So, whatever direction you name, there is some place on the Moon from which the Earth appears in that direction, and if the observer doesn't move to a different place on the Moon, then the Earth doesn't move either. It's always in the same direction. The concept of "Earth rise" or "Earth set" does not apply on the Moon.(This video from Apollo 8 came as the spacecraft was circling the Moon in orbit.)Note that for about half of the Moon's surface (the far side), the Earth is never visible. During the full moon, very little of Earth is illuminated by the Sun, as seen from the Moon.

The moon, the sun and the stars all rise in the east and set in the west due to the rotation of the earth.

Where is the moon when it is full?

At full moon, the Moon is opposite the Sun. It will (approximately) rise at sunset, and set at sunrise. At new moon, the moon is in the same direction as the Sun. It is still there, we just cant see the side lit by sunlight as it is facing away from the Earth when in the New Moon phase.
