The building of Apollo spacecraft was managed out of the Johnson Space Center (known then a the Manned Spacecraft Center), a NASA center near Houston, Texas. The primary contractor was a company named North American Aviation. The company later merged with Rockwell-Standard and became North American Rockwell -- later renamed Rockwell International. Today the part of the company that was the prime contractor for Apollo is part of Boeing.
The Apollo spacecraft was primarily made of aluminum alloys, stainless steel, and titanium. The exterior of the spacecraft was covered in a thermal protection system made of ablative materials to protect it during reentry into Earth's atmosphere. The spacecraft also had components made of various other metals, ceramics, and composites to fulfill different functions.
The Apollo 11 is made up of two main parts, the command module and the lunar module. There were over two million separate parts that made up the Apollo 11 spacecraft. Including the Saturn V booster which was, by far, the largest part.
The first manned spacecraft to orbit the moon was Apollo 8, which launched on December 21, 1968. It was the second manned mission in the Apollo program and made ten orbits around the moon before returning safely to Earth.
The Apollo spacecraft was built by NASA contractors in various locations, including North American Aviation in California and Grumman Aircraft Engineering in New York. The spacecraft components were then assembled at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Apollo 1, but the first Apollo to be launched was Apollo 7, a three man spacecraft.
