Mark Twain was not the author's real name. Samuel Langhorne Clemens, the writer and humorist who took the pen name Mark Twain, was born November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. He arrived at a time when the world was celebrating Halley's Comet, which is visible every 75 or 76 years.

He always said that he came in with Halley's Comet and expected to go out with it when it returned in 1910: "The Almighty has said, no doubt: 'Now here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together.' "

As fate would have it, Twain died on April 21, 1910 in Redding, Connecticut of a heart condition.
