One, Catherine Thompson Hogarth in 1836, from whom he separated in 1858, much to the shock and disapproval of not only his children but the public. The separation was covered widely in the newspapers and Dickens himself bought a full-page ad in order to publish a letter in his own defense. In 1857, Dickens met a young actress, Ellen Ternan, through his interest in amateur theatre. He fell in love with her and the rest of his life was largely focused on his relationship with her, although his literary output was not affected. Ternan might have been his mistress; she certainly was never his wife.

(He met her again many years later and was appalled by how plump and vapid she had become. She appeared in Little Dorrit as Flora Finching, much to her dismay.) In 1836, he married Catherine Hogarth and they had 10 children together. In 1857, he met and fell in love with actress Ellen Ternan, who was probably the reason for the break up of his marriage. They remained companions, more or less secretly, until Dickens's death in 1870.
