I finally tracked down the noise. The shift linkage goes underneath the carpet on the drivers side and it has a plastic holder that it attaches to. My cable was out of the holder and directly on the metal floorpan. The drivetrain noise was traveling up the cable and spread throughout the floor. When I put the cable back into the holder the noise went away. It was a completely harmless noise. I really hope this helps someone else out there who is having just as much trouble finding the noise as I did.
possibly your wheel bearing is on its way out
if its a front wheel drive vehicle then it could be the axels
Its usually a U joint. Click under acceleration . While turning,a CV joint. Grinding or moaning is usually a bearing.
To determine if a rear end is out, listen for unusual noises such as grinding or whining while driving, especially when accelerating or turning. Check for fluid leaks under the vehicle, as low or contaminated differential fluid can indicate issues. Additionally, inspect for play in the wheels by shaking them; excessive movement could signal worn bearings or a failing differential. If you experience vibrations or handling issues, it's also a sign that the rear end may need attention.
Turning uses a knife edge to shear a piece off grinding uses a stone to abrade and break off a pieces the width of the stone turning point or line contact grinding area contact
most grinding noises that come from turning is usually a cv axle that needs to be replaced. Can also be a bad wheel bearing. If you hear the grinding when turning to the right then the left front wheel bearing is bad.
It sounds like you have a bad CV joint. Often times the rubber boot covering the joint will go bad after a while and allow dirt and moisture in the joint, causing noise, most noticeable on turning.
Its more than likely the throwout bearing in the clutch assembly. Or could be a wheel bearing or cv joint. It would help if i knew what make and model the vehicle is.
If it happens only when turning corners, this is likely to come from the differential. A ball bearing problem would make noise all the time.
mine is a 2001 QX4 with the same problem. as far as i know, it could be a bearing problem.
Bad wheel bearings usually cause a grinding noise, and are known to only cause it when turning.
