The exhaust valves will be located closest to the exhaust manifold side of the head & are always smaller in diameter than intake valves.
Also if any are open @ the time you will see the carbon build up around the exhaust valves
where as the intakes will be considerably cleaner.

4 valve sohc/dohc heads and hemi heads are both cross flow heads. It is because the intake valve is across from the exhaust veruses inline as with regular 2 valve wedge heads.
look at the head with the valve cover off find where the exhaust manifold goes in tha is the exhaust valve or looking at the valves the first one is exhaust then intake then intake ,exhaust,exhaust,intake,intake,exhaust if you have the head off i think the intake valves are bigger than the exhaust

The valves are mechanical devices in the engine heads that open and close. The intake valve opens to let the air/gas mixture into the combustion chamber,. Both valves close the combustion chamber during the compression stroke, and the exhaust valve opens to let the burnt gas out during the exhaust stroke.

That's an easy one. Take the rocker box's, (valve covers) off. The valves that line up with the intake runners, are intakes, and the ones that line up with the exhaust, are exhaust. If the heads are off, always the larger valve, is intake.

If you have the heads off then the small valve will be the exhaust. Now if the heads are still on the block then remove the valve cover and look at the valve springs. Starting at the front of the head and moving towards the rear the valves will be in this order. E I I E E I I E The E stands for exhaust and the I stands for intake.
