You need to put a block of wood against the blade of the fan in a way as to prevent the fan from turning. It is advised to wrap this block in an old towel or large rag to protect the fan blade.
It is a fan with a clutch. You have to have clutch wrentches to remove it. The nut that holds it to the water pump is an 1 1/2 nut. You have to hold the water pump pulley from turning and loosen the nut by turning it counter clockwise (as you are looking at it).
There are usually 4 bolts that hold the clutch to the water pump shaft. It's often an awkward process to hold the shaft from turning while you remove the bolts, but it can be done. There is a tool available to assist in holding the shaft in place. Most auto parts store will allow you to "borrow" the tool if they have one available. I used a pipe wrench when I did it, but the clearance is difficult. As a note: when you replace the water pump, replace the thermostat at the same time as you will have the needed clearance to reach it.
Not with the proper tools. You will need a 36 mm wrench and a spanner to hold the water pump.
1. Change the belt. 2. Make or buy the tool to fit the holes on the pulley.
Standing in front you would turn the 1 7/16" nut counterclockwise to remove the fan and clutch assembly. You may need to hold the flat water pump pulley from turning with a strap wrench.
Disconnect the battery. Using a clutch fan tool, hold the clutch to loosen and remove it. Remove the fan shroud. Drain the radiator. Remove the water pump belt, then the pump. Install the pump and reverse the process to finish the process.
First you have to remove the fan shroud which is bolted to the radiator and front cross bracket with 10mm bolts. There should be 4 10mm bolts that hold the fan and clutch to the water pump. What you generally have to do is find a way to hold the clutch fan in place, I have used a large flat tip screwdriver in the past. Then you have to loosen the 4 bolts and remove the clutch and fan as a single unit. Once out of the vehicle you should be able to remove the fan from the clutch unit and only replace the clutch unit itself. Hope that helps a little Michael
To remove the fan clutch from a 1992 Mercedes 190E 2.3-liter, first, ensure the engine is cool and disconnect the battery. Use a wrench to hold the water pump pulley in place while you turn the fan clutch counterclockwise to unscrew it from the water pump shaft. If it's stubborn, you may need to use a fan clutch holding tool. Once removed, inspect the clutch and replace it if necessary before reinstalling the new or existing fan clutch.
To remove the cooling fan clutch from a 2002 GMC Envoy, first, disconnect the negative battery cable. Next, use a wrench to hold the water pump pulley in place, then use a fan clutch tool or a large wrench to unscrew the fan clutch by turning it counterclockwise. Once loosened, carefully lift the fan and clutch assembly off the water pump shaft. Ensure to check for any debris or damage before reinstallation.
have someone mash the clutch while you are under the truck looking at the cylinder to see if its moving, if no movement undo the line and hold your thumb over it and have someone mash the clutch to see if brake fluid squirts out, if no fluid squirts out, replace the clutch master cylinder
