Ok, I have just replaced the drive belt on my John Deer 14sb without taking the engine off. 1. Take the blade off. 2. Remove the four bolts/spacers holding the clutch mechanism and note the position of the guide flanges plate. 3. Take off the big spring ( I did this using a large flat screwdriver levered against the edge of the clutch mechanism). 4. The new belt has to go around the angled bracket that operates the clutch mechanism. Push one end of the new belt through the slot where the above bracket enters the platform, you will need to pinch and poke. Turn the machine onto its' wheels and remove the clutch cable. The next bit is the trickiest. 5. The belt needs to go over the bracket but to do that the leading edge of the belt has to go underneath it. . Make sure you understand the route it needs to take. I forced up the bracket from underneath using wedges and a small crow bar to start the leading edge of the belt underneath the bracket to allow the belt to be squeezed between the bracket and the platform. That is the hard bit but it took only a few minutes and you need to use blunt tools against the belt to avoid damage. 6. Now you can push and pull the belt over the bracket and back into the underparts. The bracket had bent up a little but from the top was easy to bend back. And there it is. Best in place with no damage and no engine removal.
