The Engine Coolant Temperature sensor is on the back of the engine, right in the middle (and unfortunately the most difficult place to reach!). It is mounted on the coolant outlet that connects to the heater hoses up on the firewall. It is connected by a single electrical harness and screwed in. I can't remember exactly, but I believe you can get at it with a 17mm wrench size.

The same answer will apply for 1990-2005 Mazda Miatas.
