Yes, sensors can be damaged if an unapproved sealant is used. Unapproved sealants may contain chemicals that can corrode or degrade the materials of the sensor, leading to malfunctions or inaccurate readings. Additionally, improper sealing can create moisture retention or exposure to contaminants, further compromising sensor integrity. It's crucial to use manufacturer-recommended sealants to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

It's generally not necessary to apply sealant to the threads of a coolant sensor, as these sensors are typically designed to create a seal when properly tightened. However, if the manufacturer’s instructions or the specific application suggests it, a small amount of thread sealant may be used to prevent leaks. Always ensure that the sealant is compatible with coolant and does not interfere with the sensor's function. It's best to consult the vehicle's service manual for specific recommendations.
Answer back up sensorsIt was just a few months after I bought my 99 Windstar that I had problems. It always seem to happen after it had rained and when I got to the dealer the problem went away. After numerous trips they seemed to finally resolve the problem.I was told that they used some kind of marine sealant on the sensors. It would appear that when it rained or after I washed the van the sensors would short out. That seemed to work for about 2 years now the problem has returned. The sensors seem to work after a few days of no rain. I think the sealant has broken down.
