Carefully pry pad wear sensor from brake pad. Then insert brake pad wear sensor into cutout in new pad where applicable.

As far as I know, the older BMW uses brake sensor inline with the brakpads. Once the pads are low enough, the sensor get worn down, which use to conduct electricity no longer do so. As a result, the sensor lights are tripped. To reset the lights, you need to replace the brake sensors.
Replace the Gear Position Sensor on the transmission. Cost is approximately $350. There is a sensor on the brake that will prevent the gearshift from moving out of park until the brake is pressed down. Before you replace some $350 item in the transmission, make sure it isn't this sensor that is causing the issue.

check the switch on the top of the brake pedal.
It's just above the brake pedal, connected to the brake pedal arm. The switch comes out with two screws and the new one plugs in. But before you replace the switch, check the adjustment.
The left front speed sensor is electric and does not have a cable. The sensor is accessed by removing the brake rotor.

There is a sensor in the top of the brake cylinder where you put in the fluid. Replace it and the light will go away.
