There are two ways to go about this route:

firstly, you could go the faster and smoother route through Michigan, crossing through the U.S.A. This will take you up the I-75 corridor to Sault Ste. Marie (a recommended stopping point for this route, as well as for the other route), where you will connect with HIGHWAY 17. If you drive this route, however, you will need to cross through international border twice. Although this may be an inconvenince, but, if you can deal with the hassle of crossing the international border twice, this route is recommended for you.

The route itself is 1,770 kilometres (1,100 miles) taking this route:

  1. Take HIGHWAY 401 - WEST, from Toronto, to HIGHWAY 403 - WEST to SARNIA at EXIT 183, outside of London.
  2. Take HIGHWAY 403 - WEST to the U.S.A PORT HURON, MICHIGAN, U.S.A via the BLUEWATER BRIDGE (toll) from Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.
  3. Once you are in MICHIGAN, you will follow signs to I-69 WEST to FLINT.
  4. Take I-69 WEST to I-75 NORTH to SAGINAW, via I-475 NORTHin FLINT (EXIT 137 off I-69 to get onto I-475, follow signs to I-475 NORTH to SAGINAW).
  5. Take I-75 NORTH, through Michigan, to the Canadian border x-ing, via the INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE at SAULT STE. MARIE. You will be crossing back into ONTARIO, CANADA.
  6. Once you are back in Ontario, Canada, follow signs to HIGHWAY 17 - WEST to THUNDER BAY.
  7. Once you are on HIGHWAY 17 - WEST, take HIGHWAY 17 - WEST directly to IGNACE, which is past Thunder Bay.

If you do not wish to go through the U.S.A. (Michigan), you can also stay in Ontario for the whole trip, even though may take longer, and will be a less smooth drive. To go this route will mean that you will not need to cross international borders twice, but you will instead be forced to drive on narrower corridors, making it a longer drive, even though this route is shorter distance-wise. If you do not wish to bear the hassle of crossing the border twice, however, this route is a reasonable alternative, and will still suit your purposes well. Again, Sault Ste. Marie is a recommended stopping point for this route as well.

So, for this route (staying in Ontario for the whole trip), it is 1,590 kilometres (988 miles) taking this route:

  1. Take HIGHWAY 400 - NORTH, from Toronto (towards BARRIE), to HIGHWAY 69 - NORTH, when the highway ends.
  2. Continue on HIGHWAY 69 - NORTH to HIGHWAY 17 - WEST to SAULT STE. MARIE, in Greater Sudbury.
  3. Take HIGHWAY 17 - WEST directly to IGNACE, which is beyond Thunder Bay.

Have a safe trip, and make sure to explore both alternatives, to see what fit's your ideal driving conditions.
