The Republic of Texas claimed that their boudary to the west was the Rio Grande river, but few if any Texans had ever entered or returned from the Staked Plains and the Comancheria which lay between the westernmost Texican settlement and Santa Fe. To reinforce their claim they mounted the Expedition without knowing where they were going and how far away Santa Fe was. Their plan was to prove to the US Congress that they were much larger then the US Congress believed. Unfortunately they met an Army Patrol from Mexico that showed them the way home after a 2,000 mile hike to Mexico City.
