Key is designed to not come out unless the transmission is in the park position. Check to make sure that the shift linkage is adjusted properly. If not, the linkage may not be able to move the gears inside the transmission enough to properly engage. I have a Daytona that has a procedure to lock the transmission in a known position, the shift cables are loosened at the shifter, and two rods are placed in the shifter to lock it in a corresponding known position. Then the cables connecting the two are tightened down, the 'locks' are removed, and everything is good to go. Check to see if the linkage on the transmission or in the gear shifter inside the car is bent. Check to see if something is interfering with the shift linkage. Could be a hose or something in the way. You may have to open the transmission if the remedies above didn't fix it. Something may be bent inside the transmission preventing the gears from engaging properly.
