I believe your ear hole closes, because when you don't wear earring's for awhile, the skin just grows together again. It's just like when you get a shot. The hole eventually grows together again. To avoid this, wear earrings continually. In the six month's, even wear earrings at night!

It is unlikely that an ear piercing hole will close up immediately if the earring is removed, as the body needs time to begin the healing process. However, if the earring is removed soon after piercing, there is a possibility that the hole may start to close up.
The most common drawback of getting your ear gauged is that the hole may never close. If you find that in a few years you no longer wish to have your ear gauged, you might be stuck with it.
Most people get their second hole on their right ear. ;D. But, it depends which ear you like best ;]
if you left the taper in after you stretched it, it might have caused the hole to be that shape. or it may be because when you take the plug out, the holes close up a little bit. but its normal.
No the hole will not close up completely, it will shrink however this will take weeks to occure, it may shrink down to 10g ~ 14g if you are lucky.

Try a different style of ear plug
Yes, it can cause an ear infection
From experience, if it does get infected, it will close, or at least try to. If you decide to keep your gauges out for a while, yes the hole will shrink. It depends on how long you keep the gauge out of your ear.
