How about a round bathroom sponge. You could show an analogy of picking up oxygen by dipping it in water, moving it somewhere else and squeezing the (wet) oxygen out again.

Another nice analogy is using fluffy balls representing oxygen and velcro on your blood cell. If there was an "active site" area, or shall we call it a hole or pit, in your haemoglobin molecule, it would be even better. A kitchen glove ? Or an egg box.

A red blood cell is basically a biconcave sack filled with hemoglobin.

1) You could take something like packing peanuts or anything that is small and you have a lot of - use these as hemoglobin.

2) Then find a sack, perferably one that is see through, use this as your cell membrane.

3) Fill the sack with your 'hemoglobin', and voila, you have a red blood cell. If you explain to your teacher, she will like it even better.

4) To achieve the biconcave shape (this is going the extra mile if you are below high school level), after fill the sack and tying it off, take a needle and thread. Pass the needle and thread through the middle of the sack and tighten it around the sack so that it puckers inwards, creating a biconcave shape.

You could use a white polystyrene ball and stick in white pipe cleaners but this is just a simple idea and there is bound to be many more ideas out there. Just be imaginative.

Or to make a red blood cell model you can get a round or close to round sponge and carve out a hole in the middle and paint it red this is only one you could get a plastic salsa pot and cut the bottom out and paper mache it all the way around

There are many ways a person can make a model of a blood cell. A person can use clay to make the shapes and insides of the blood cell, or they could use jello and various fruits to show everything.

I made play-doh, to start with.

Then, I used food colouring to dye my blood cells red.

I left it overnight in the fridge, wrapped in cling-wrap.

I took it out, almost 24 hours later.

You must, after taking it out, leave it to cool to room temperature before putting in the oven.

After it gets slightly cooler, heat the oven, take the play-doh, already modelled into your blood cell shapes, and put it in until you think it's ready.
