"Gum tree" is an Australian term for the Eucalyptus tree. They are found all over the world - Australia, Africa, America, Asia - and different species have adapted to different climates, from deserts, to alpine regions, to coastal areas. There are over 700 species of eucalyptus. Gum trees can tolerate areas of drought and dry soils, and some species can also adapt to high rainfall and frequent flooding. Whilst gum trees are known for being the tree favoured by koalas, found only in Australia, it does not restrict gum-trees to only Australia. They are so prolific that they have been declared a noxious weed in parts of USA.

Gum trees are found over the entire Australian continent - from coastal areas, to Alpine regions and the High Country, to deserts and arid areas. Different species adapt uniquely to their area. The gum trees favoured by koalas are mostly found in the eastern half of the continent, and the far south-western corner.
