"Ebony" is a general term encompassing a number of different species of tree. The most famous is Diospyros ebenum, a small evergreen native to Sri Lanka and India. Since the tree keeps its leaves year round, it's nominally a softwood. In reality, however, the lumber is rock hard an dense enough to sink in water.
Contrast this with balsa wood. The balsa tree is deciduous (thus, technically a hardwood) yet the lumber is light enough for airplane construction.
