The live R bacteria picked up DNA from the heat-killed S bacteria, which contained the genetic material for producing a capsule. This genetic transfer allowed the R bacteria to produce a capsule and become virulent, causing the mice to die from the infection.

∙ 14y agoBecause bacteria can absorb free DNA and become pathogenic (in this case, sometimes it's harmless). But that is only one of three ways bacteria can get new genes:
Transduction- genes transferred from one bacteria to another by a virus

This experiment was conducted by Frederick Griffith in 1928. He observed that when he mixed a harmless strain of bacteria with a heat-killed virulent strain, the harmless bacteria were transformed into a virulent form. This led to the hypothesis that something in the heat-killed bacteria had transformed the live bacteria.
