Penguins are able to protect themselves through their excellent swimming ability as well as their coloration. Penguins have white or other light colors on their stomachs and black on their backs. This protects them from being seen by predators while they are in the water. If a predator is below them in the water, the white stomach will blend into the snow and the light shining down from the sun. If a predator is above the penguin, the black will blend into the dark sea.
