Here's a quick tip on chemically cleaning or killing the algae living in the sand in a sand filter. The next time you shock your swimming pool, poor the shock or bleach in the skimmer. This will provide a very high level of chlorine in the filter for a very short period of time. Long enough to kill the stubborn algae living in the filter but not long enough to hurt your Plumbing.

What chemical do you use to clean pool filters?

Most sand and DE filters are cleaned with an acid solution by soaking overnight. Cartridges can use a spray on type and then blasting clean with water. Avoid using household detergents. Biguanide users (Baquacil, Revacil, Soft Swim) should use the product recommended by their manufacturer as it is specifically designed to break down the PHMB residue in the filter. Chlorine users can use any of the filter cleaning products sold at their neighborhood pool store. Pool & Spa

How do you Clean cartrige pool filters with hydrochloric acid?

Cartridge filters can over time become les effective because the material they are made of becomes clogged with calcium. A method that worked well for me in the past before I changed to a sand filter was to soak the whole cartridge in a fairly strong solution of acid. This eats out the calcium and gets the cartridge working properly again. I may be wise however to check that the material of the filter can withstand the corrosive effect of the acid. Cleaners that do this are also available ready made at pool shops.

What is the best way to convert a pool from bacquicil product to chlorine?

That is not an easy answer but here goes! Baqualcil is not compatible with chlorine in any way shape or form so the best thing to do if you biguinide level is above 30ppm is to ride it down let if go until the level is 30ppm or lower. Take you pool water to a pool store and have it professionally analyzed. Once you are at that point you want to shock the pool with 3 pounds of monopersulfate per 10,000 gallons of pool water 3 days in a row. Then have the water check again at the pool store to make sure your level is below 10ppm. Once this is done add 3 pounds of calcium hypochlorite per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Make sure the shock is at least 65% available chlorine or higher. The pool will turn green do no panic! Next, if you have a sand filter, change the sand in the filter. If you have a DE filter use a chemical cleaner that is designed to clean biquinide filters, if you have a cartridge filter do the same as a DE filter. Now it is time to start using chlorine tablets. Keep in mind that every time you shock the pool for the next 2-3 times the pool will turn a light green then go to blue overnight this will slow go away over time.
