PCl5 has a trigonal bipyramidal shape in which P—Cl (axial) bonds are slightly larger than the P—Cl (equatorial) bonds. This makes the molecule, rather, unstable. It dissociates to lose two chlorine atoms involved in the axial bonds and thus, acts as a chlorinating agent.

PCl5 ⇌ PCl3 + Cl2

Pcl5 is formed but Ncl5 is not formed why?

NCl5 does not exist bcoz nitrogen atom does not have d-orbitals to accomodate electrons from chlorine atoms and nitrogen cant accomodate more than 8 electrons in its valence shell. so its covalency exists only upto four.... pcl5 exists bcoz phosphorus atom has vacant d orbitals to accomodate electrons and thus pcl5 exists

What is the difference between pcl3 and pcl5?

PCl5 is wildly used as a cyclizating agent becase it is more reactive than PCl3.

Why PCl5 is reactive but SF6 is stable?

PCL5 is formed two types of P-CL bond, equitorial and axial bonds. The axial bonds suffer more repulsion than the equitorial bonds, and they can easily break, which makes PCL5 unstable. SF6 is largely inert due to steric hindrance.

Can PCl5 act as both oxidizing and reducing agent?

The oxidation state of phosphorous in PCl5 is +5.The valence shell has 5 electrons. It therefore cannot increase its oxidation state more than 5.Therefore PCl5 cannot act as a reducing agent as it cannot donate electrons. The oxidation state can be decreased to +3 by gaining electrons. There for PCl5 can act as a oxidizing agent.A example is given below along with the change in oxidation states of phosphorous.

Why PF5 is known but neither NCl5 nor NF5 is known?

There are 5 outermost electrons in both phosphorus and nitrogen atoms but in nitrogen no more than three unpaired electrons are possible due to absence of d-orbitals in 2nd energy level so nitrogen may form only three covalent bonds (as NCl3 and NF3) but d-orbitals are present in 3rd energy level of Phosphorus so in excited state it may have five unpaired electrons and may form PCl5.

Why is organic food better than non-organic?

Organic food is better than non-organic because it contains more nutrients.

Is a stuffed potato a organic dish?

If all the ingredients in it are organic than it is organic.

Is organic better than non organic?

sometimes. if you are alergic to eggs like me, it's better to eat organic eggs than regular eggs. organic food tastes sweeter than non organic food as it has more water and natural sugars in it.

Hybridization of the central atom of PCl5?

The central atom of PCl5 is P. In this case, phosphorous has an sp3d hybridization. It is connected to 5 other atoms, one more than the 4 for sp3 hybridization.

Is organic skin care better than non-organic?

Yes. There are less chemicals in organic skin care products than non-organic and therefore is better for your skin. http://www.organicsanonymous.com/
