It can not always be decided who started the fight and it ends up causing more controversy...

Every person (including school children) have the legal right to defend themselves against bodily harm by using a reasonable means of force.

However, in doing so there are consequences that they will face from the school.

Most all schools have a no tolerence policy on fighting,This is because the school can not always determine who started the fight so both are punished equally..This may seem unfair however it avoids many problems that occured in the past before the no tolerence policy, most of which involved the parents of the students claiming the other student started the fight but did not get punished so the school lays blame to both students rather than just one...

So self defense is allowed but in doing so it has its own set consequences.
