Fighter Pilots
"Top Gun" is the common name for the US Navy Figher Weapons School that was used to train pilots some improved methods of air combat. The school used skilled instructors to fly the "enemy" aircraft, which included an assortment of aircraft that fly like the Russian airplanes. Top Gun was training only and was not a real combat.
Top Gun pilots primarily train at the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC) located at Naval Air Station Fallon in Nevada, but they also conduct training exercises in Florida. The Florida training typically occurs at the Naval Air Station Key West, where pilots engage in air-to-air and air-to-ground exercises. This location provides a range of operational environments and scenarios to enhance their combat readiness.

As of now, there are two "Top Gun" movies. The original film, "Top Gun," was released in 1986, starring Tom Cruise as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. The sequel, "Top Gun: Maverick," premiered in 2022, continuing the story of Maverick as he trains a new generation of pilots.
In "Top Gun," the pilots are often referred to by their call signs, which serve as their nicknames. Some of the notable call signs include "Maverick" for Pete Mitchell, "Goose" for Nick Bradshaw, "Iceman" for Tom Kazansky, and "Charlie" for Charlotte Blackwood. Other pilots have names like "Slider," "Viper," and "Cougar." These nicknames reflect their personalities or characteristics and are a key part of the camaraderie among the pilots.
