In fact, thinks the consumer, the whole advertising community are liars and can't be trusted. This works against the advertisement industry and the products they sell. In fact, many products' reputations are damaged if they advertise at all. Lawyers and luxury items are prime examples. Lawyers who advertise in mass media are usually considered to be "ambulance chasers." The lawyer's reputation is largely hurt if he must "stoop" to advertising -- the perception is that he can't rely on word-of-mouth to get clients.
