The MRE, which officially means "Meal, Ready to Eat" (unofficially it also means "Meal, Rejected by Everyone" because it doesn't taste very good or "Meal, Rejected by Egyptians" because of an old Army war story I'll tell you in just a second) is part of the Army Field Feeding System. It is a single meal for an individual soldier, and it comes in a brown plastic bag. In it you will find an entree, fruit, crackers with spread, candy, coffee...there's actually quite a bit of food in one of these, and most of them are at least edible. Some of them are pretty good. They also come with a cute little bottle of Tabasco that's about an inch high, that contains about one-third of the Tabasco you need...but what the hell, you can't have everything, right? The Army Field Feeding System includes the A Ration, which is fresh food cooked in the field (which is what the Army would prefer to feed its troops); the T-ration, which means Tray Pack; and the MRE. The T-ration comes in a box and feeds twelve people. When you get it, there are (IIRC) three sealed tray-shaped cans you're supposed to boil for however long it says to boil them on the label--it varies depending on which one you get. There's also bread and fruit. Oh, about the war story: During Desert Storm, a US unit was being supported by an Egyptian unit. It came chow time and the soldiers in the US unit wanted to be hospitable, so they dug through their MRE case, found one that looked at least slightly close to being halal--no pork products in it--and offered it to an Egyptian soldier who told them his religion forbade him from eating square food. Being in the Middle East where Islam is strong, they were afraid they offended the Egyptian soldier. They found another Egyptian soldier who told them Islam did not forbid square food, but that man already had one MRE and one was enough. I tell you what, though, the Canadian army's MRE is excellent. The best part is the customer comment card in each meal--which the Defence Ministry actually reads. There's a rumor in the American army that French field rations contain French food and wine. There's no wine...and as for the French food comment, I asked a French soldier about that. "Of course it's French food. What else would it be? But it's BAD French food."

I am not sure what the common answer would have to do with Religion and Spirituality, but MRE's are Meals Ready to Eat. They are pouches of food for the military to eat, if necessary, without dishes, stoves, utensils, etc. After typing this, I saw another question, and realized you were probably talking about a Master's (Degree) in Religious Education.

What's a basic MRE Meal?

There are many variations, but each meal is designed to supply the user with a basic number of calories for one meal based on a 3-meal day. They may be eaten unheated, hence the acronym MRE (Meal Ready to Eat), and they are a big improvement over the C-rations of World War II, or the hardtack (North) or cornbread (South) diet of the American Civil War. The variety is impressive, and I am told that American soldiers often trade meals with each other for ones they like better. In addition, there is a beef-free MRE for Hindu soldiers, and a pork-free MRE for Muslim soldiers which were air-dropped to Iraqi refugees in order to sway them toward the West instead of the Hussein Regime. There is also a meat-free MRE for vegetarian soldiers. I have eaten MREs and judged the quality as good, especially when the alternative is nothing to eat. The meal is sealed in a plastic envelope and takes less than ten minutes to prepare and eat unheated, longer if heated. The main course is a meat or pasta-and-meat product, with fruit and cereal products sealed in smaller envelopes, a packet of Taster's Choice instant coffee, and about enough toilet paper to blow your nose with. The MRE is not perfect, and no substitute for a field kitchen, but it is still better than what American soldiers ate in the past, and a lot better than nothing under combat conditions.
