There could be an issue with the power button not working properly, or it could be some lockup with the phone's OS. Common culprit for the latter is that you are nearly at the phone's max internal storage capacity (4 GB). You might consider moving some apps to the phone's microSD card, and clear the cache from time to time. Back to your question, a temporary solution for shutting your phone down is you can try force shutting down by pressing the Power key and Volume Up key at the same time, and keep it pressed until the phone shuts off.

If a motor is running when the cap fails it will probably continue to run at much higher amp draw and most likely shut down on thermal overload. It can start with a bad cap, but in my experience it most likey wont.

The gears inside are stripped just disconnect the electrical plug on the side of the unit and leave it up.
