The relatively small Algonquin or Algonkin tribe of Canada were historically located mainly in southern Quebec and eastern Ontario in many separate and unconnected bands, each with its own chief. Their main area was along the St Lawrence and Ottawa rivers, but they were pushed westwards by the Iroquois, with whom they constantly waged fierce warfare.

They called themselves Omàmiwinini or Anishinabegand spoke a language closely related to that of the Ojibwe (who also refer to themselves as Anishinaabe (which refers to a tribal ancestor figure being lowered to earth by the Great Spirit).

By the 1600s their population had decreased to around 3,000 from an estimated pre-contact figure of 125,000. Today there are around 8,000 in at least 7 different communities and much effort is being made to preserve their native language and culture.
