Turkey is predominatnly made up of Ottoman Turkish peoples who are decendants from nomadic herdsman from Central Asia around 1200BC. Many Turks are also related to the ancient people which once comprised much of the ancient Persian, Hittite, Greek and Roman Empires. More Recently, Greek Byzantians were in Turkey giving us many of the modern monestaries and churches which can be found throughout this Islamic nation.

In 1450, Turkey defeated the Byzantine Empire in a large war and conquered what they had lost, including Greece, the Balkans, and much of North Africa and the Middle East. During Their reign over the region, the Turks took vast mounts of land, and their people were often moved to new regions, enslaved or killed. This is predominately noticiable witht the horrible genocide against the Armenians where nearly 1.5million armenians were killed as well as Georgians, Russians and other Eastern Christian Groups. Many Greeks were also brought back to Turkey as slaves during their fight for independence. Today over 85% of the country considers itself "Turkish" or a mixture of ancient Persian and Central Asian. But a large portion considers themselves Armenian, Greek, Georgian, Arabic.

Today Turkey is attempting to get into the European Union, against the wishes of many EU states, and many people in Turkey. Today many Turks will tell you that they are "European" or "Turkish" not necessarily based off of Geography where much of Turkey is in Europe, but for recognition of European commrodery or not.
