It depends on the type of diet and exercise..a lot of people think that if they eat less they will lose weight, but that is not true, depending on how much "less" is. If you starve yourself, your body thinks that there is a famine, so whatever you do eat, it stores to fat. But if you eat when you are hungry, say maybe every 2 to 2.5 hours, (SMALL amounts!) then your body thinks there's plenty of food and uses it for energy.
If you are doing a lot of weight training and resistance training for exercise, your body will put on muscle, which weighs more than fat. A healthy mix of cardio and weights/resistance will help you to lose weight.
Many times, its better to go by inches than weight anyways...its possible to lose inches before weight.
Oh, and whatever you do, don't eat or drink anything that is "low fat" or labeled as a diet product. They have to make these things taste good or people won't buy them, so they put in more sugar or fructose or other syrups to make up for the loss of fat in the food. Just stick to regular stuff and eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink a lot of water, and you should be fine.
Good luck!
