The fastest way between Madison, WI and Grand Rapids, MI is by car. Sure, you can fly, but with check-in times and parking and the costs associated with air travel, it's less hassle just to drive. The first tip is, take the South Beltline over toward I94, and I94 down, through Indiana and to the Toll road. TAKE THE SKYWAY, I don't care if it costs more and takes you "through" downtown. It's faster, if you time it right. Follow the Dan Ryan through, and take the 80/90 cutoff, the toll road, up towards Rockford, Beloit and Madison. When you're planning for your trip, make sure that the Chicago stretch is taken either before 7 AM, or after 8 PM. You'll avoid rush-hour, and be much happier for it. Keeping up with the general flow of traffic, and only stopping once for the bathroom or a gas-up, I've made the trip in as little as five hours, door-to-door.

Another option is taking the good old S.S. Badger. Not necessarily faster for this particular trip but still one to consider.
