It's just like doing death metal growls. But you have to have a pitch-shifter to make it really low. It's basically extremely low death Metal vocals.
Often times, yes, death metal vocals will use distortion and other effects. These are generally added afterwards, though, just to beef it up and give it a fuller sound. If you can't get the death metal sound on your own, no amount of distortion or effects will help.
no. death metal consists of elaborate guitar sequences, fast pace drumming including double base, and screaming/ singing from the vocals
Death metal is a little heavier then black. Also Death metal's lyrics are focused on, well Death. Dying, ways to die, torture, etc Black Metal's lyrics are mainly focused on anti-god, and satanism. the vocals in black metal are a little bit screechier and higher then Death. Where Death metal has more growling like vocals.
I tend to agree with the COTD philosophy on what is and isn't Doom Metal, but, aside from that, you should get a hold of the "Tragedies" album from Funeral. If you don't mind exclusively female vocals, there's also Thorr's Hammer and Burning Witch, both of which are O'malley projects. Personally, while I do quite like Burning Witch, I find Thorr's Hammer to be very monotonous and boring, but still worth a listen for Runhild's vocals.

Metal uses a type of vocals called "screaming" (im not sure why a lot of people call it screamo, screamo is not metal) these vocals consist of different types and styles of screams. Low or high growls are often used in metal and death metal. In hardcore music they often use fry screams, which are more vocally based instead of diaphram bassed like growls. Try youtube for turtorials of how to us screaming vocals. I must add, this style of music is not satanic or devil worshiping in anyway. Some bands are satanic, but it's not as common.
Common instruments in death metal include electric guitars, bass guitars, drums, and often keyboards. Additionally, death metal bands may also incorporate growled vocals and occasionally use other instruments like synths or samples for added atmosphere.
