Beer strengthvaries bylocalcustom.
British ale tends to average 4.4% abv. Belgian beers tend to average 8% abv. The strength of the typical global pale lager is 5% abv. The yeast used for brewing beer normally cannot get the strength much beyond 12% abv; however, in the 1980s the Swiss brewery Hurlimann developed a yeast strain which could get as high as 14% for their Samichlaus beer. Since then, breweries have experimented with using champagne yeasts, continually pushing up the strength. SamuelAdams reached 20% abv with Millennium. The strongest beer sold in Britain was Dogfish Head'sWorld WideStout, a 21% abv stout which was available from UKSafeways in 2003. In Japan in 2005, the Hakusekikan BeerRestaurant sold an eisbock, strengthened through freezing, (believed to be) 28% abv. The beer that is considered to be the strongest yet made is Hairof the Dog'sDave - a 29% abv barley wine made in 1994. For a comprehensive list of the strength of all beers check out the link below.

In India there are 3 types of commercially available beers:-
1. Lager beer(4% alcohol v/v)
2. Premium beer(Less than 8% v/v)
3. Super strong beer(less than 15% v/v)
In November 2009 Scotlands BrewDogBrewing released "Tactical Nuclear Penguin", claiming the title of world's strongest beer at 32% ABV. Unfortunately for BrewDog, Schorschbräu Brewing (from Germany) released "Schorschbock" in January 2010 coming in at a whopping 40% ABV. Not to be outdone BrewDog went back to the drawing board and released "Sink the Bismark" boasting a hefty 41% ABV in early 2010, reclaiming the title of worlds strongest beer. These beers are intended to be consumed in small portions, similar to hard liquor.
Regional laws can also place limitations on the alcohol content in beers. For example, beer sold in the state of Utah under a Beer-Only license, is limited to 4% ABV.
